In the continuing effort to be a productive and intentional person I am trying to keep up with and instill good habits in my life.
At the end of July I set 3 goals…here is an honest update and my new goals for September.
#1: Workout. Virtual high-five! So far I have a pretty good habit in place. Hadlie is now big enough to go to the gym daycare so I can take the troupe with me in the morning for a bit. I get to run or lift AND take a shower (that part is KEY) and I’m ready for the day. I also have some great DVD’s for working out at home if I can’t make it to the gym and the kids like doing them with me which is always fun.
#2: Reading: We have gotten a lot better about this! The girls and I are currently in the middle of reading Mr. Poppers Penguins together, I’m excited to watch the movie with them when we are done. In the afternoon, when little brother gets put down for nap, i bring out coloring books and they draw while I read to them. Zoie sometimes reads us a book too, I really enjoy that time together.
#3: Uninterrupted Play Time: Small improvement. The girls got some shopkins and we have been playing those together, but I want to be SO much better. I will relish the fact that there has been some improvement.
#1: Evening Chores: I am pretty good about my morning chores (emptying the dishwasher, starting a load of laundry, 10 minute tidy), but by the end of the day i’m WIPED! My evening chores get put off till the morning, then I get behind in the morning, then clutter builds up…etc. You get the idea. We have an appraiser coming to our house this morning so we worked this weekend to get the house in tip top shape. You guys…upstairs AND downstairs are clean at the same time. I want to make an effort to get my evening chores done so I am prepped for the next day. Evening chores include dishes, wipe counters, sweep, and fold laundry. Just saying it makes me tired.
#2: Less TV: We have already started on this but we are making a conscious effort to not have our TV on Monday – Thursday. Of course WHILE I’m typing this Freddie wandered downstairs and I just set him up with milk, banana bread, & paw patrol… Before 6am doesn’t count ok? We don’t want it to be a hard and fast legalism rule around here, just not our first option for entertainment.
#3: Washing my Face: I do it! Just not enough. I am the worst, I really don’t like getting my face wet and water running down my arms but I want to start and keep up with a good skincare regiment. I would REALLY love to buy some good products like Rodan & Fields but I feel like I can’t make that purchase if I’m not going to actually use them. My goal is to wash and moisturize my face in the morning and remove make up, wash, and moisturize in the evening. Any good skincare tips?
I have been reading a book on Hospitality lately and it is awesome. The book obviously talks about opening up our home to others and having a hospitable spirit, but it also focuses on being hospitable to our own family. I didn’t see that one coming, in my mind hospitality was always extended to others and the family did it together, and that is still true. The book is also suggesting that we, as parents/moms, should be extending hospitality to our own immediate family members. Suggestions include being kind and courteous, brushing your hair and looking decent for your husband when he comes home, preparing special meals. The one suggestion that got me thinking was implementing special family traditions. According to the author a TRADITION PROVIDES A SENSE OF STABILITY OR PERMANENCE IN OUR HOME.
The author points out that TRADITIONS ARE THE FAMILIES GOD ORDAINED VEHICLE TO PASS ON A POSITIVE HERITAGE. IT DOESN’T COST A LOT OF MONEY TO PASS ON VALUABLE TRADITIONS. BUT IT WILL COST TIME, THINKING, & COURAGE TO MOVE FROM IDEAS TO ACTION.
It made me start thinking about the traditions we have in our little family of 6.
Apparently there are three CATEGORIES that traditions can fall under… And you know how I like lists.
** Breakfast Cinnamon rolls in the number of your age.
** Jewish Feasts. Last year we starting hosting the Jewish Feasts in our home. They happen throughout the year and have become a time for us to pause and remember all the spectacular ways God loves us and sacrificed for our mistakes.
** Valentines Day. I make a special “love” breakfast for the whole family.
** Our Wedding Anniversary. With the exception of this year (since I had a baby 10 days before)… Ronnie and I have a special meal and a couples massage. #yesplease
** Friday Family Night @ the beach
** Sunday Night Dinner with Ronnie’s parents and brother & wife
** Saturday morning pancakes
** Puzzle lunch. I wish I had a picture to share. I try every week to have one puzzle lunch with the kids. We completely clear off the table. I put together a muffin tin lunch (think blueberries, lunch meat, pretzels, cut up sandwiches, etc) in the middle of the table and we spread out puzzles. Wooden puzzles for Freddie, larger 24-36 for Pennie, and 100 piece for Zoie. We all work together and I try to ask them silly questions that they normally wouldn’t take the time to answer, but since their hands are busy they normally just chit chat. Questions like “What do you like most about your sister?” “What is one thing you would change about our house?” etc. It is always fun!
** Sabbath. We don’t do any TV or extra activities on Sunday. We spend the morning at church then the rest of the afternoon reading, playing, listening to sermons, napping #amen before we go to family night dinner at my in-laws house. It’s one of the best things we have done as a family. It is truly a day of rest, even for mom!!
There have been a few ideas that I have been tossing around in my head but I haven’t come up with a great plan.
* pizza & game night
*Reading together (i want to get in a good habit of reading chapter books with my kiddos, its pretty hit or miss right now)
We would love to hear your traditions and any good ideas for us to add to our family!
Blessings from my family to yours.
WHAT WE’RE EATING THIS WEEK: Last night we took the kids out for Chick Fil A. We dont eat out very often and we quickly remembered why when at one moment one kid was sitting in the windowsill and one was licking ketchup out of a packet. We thanked our lucky stars there weren’t many people there and both agreed we need to do a better job practicing manners when we are out. Yikes!! Please tell me I’m not the only one whose kids are a little crazy when you’re out.
WHAT I’M REMINISCING ABOUT:
This little nugget coming home from the hospital is now this big girl in Kindergarten.
WHAT I’M LOVING: Iced coffee….any which way I can get it.
WHAT WE’VE BEEN UP TO: Shopkins. Are we the last ones to figure out this trend? My girls just got their first ones this week and its Shopkins non stop. I personally LOVE toys so its right up my alley, but geez louise those suckers are hard to keep track of!
WHAT I’M DREADING: Going to the gym. I didn’t go for a whole week and getting back into running and lifting is sometimes really difficult, like painful difficult.
WHAT I’M WORKING ON: Staying focused. I feel like we are off to a good start with school and I want to make sure it stays on point. I am working on keeping up with my daily schedule and creating good habits.
WHAT I’M EXCITED ABOUT: FALL!!! I just walked through Hobby Lobby yesterday and I have the RESTRAIN myself from buying everything fall. I am excited from cooler mornings and long sleeves!
WHAT I’M WATCHING/READING: Its a little embarrassing but Bachelor Pad is all sorts of awesome drama. I have it on in the background when I’m blogging or folding laundry. Also Playing House is laugh out loud funny, its my TV highlight of the week.
WHAT I’M LISTENING TO: Kidz Bop and VBS worship CD. Its on repeat in my car. When the kids fall asleep, i’ve been listening to Les Brown. He’s an inspirational speaker who has an amazing story.
WHAT I’M WEARING: Everything Shaeffer tells me to. 🙂
WHAT I’M DOING THIS WEEKEND: Nothing, and I’m super excited about it! I wouldn’t mind a trip to the pool and a long nap.
WHAT I’M LOOKING FORWARD TO THIS MONTH: Camping!! Our little family of 6 is going on our first adventure beach camping! My parents are coming along too (praise Jesus!) and I can’t wait to give it a try. Ronnie & I figure if we keeping adding to our family we are going to have to get really good at camping to be able to afford family vacations! We are beach people so I think its going to be an awesome trip! I can’t wait to make some memories with my littles. Any good camping tips are VERY welcome!!
WHAT ELSE IS NEW: I finally hung photos and decorations upstairs in the hallway and master bedroom, its only been a year of living here right? I will post a Skyridge House update soon.
WHAT IS MY FAVORITE BACK TO SCHOOL TRADITION: I love taking the first day of school photo. There is something about the excitement that makes me smile every time I look at them.
Blessings from my family to yours!
We get to do this twice, its a bonus of homeschooling. Yesterday was our first day of home-school, we rolled out of bed, had a yummy breakfast and got to work.
Zoie is a really good student so far. She enjoys learning and picks things up really fast.
Pennie is excited to do some of the “hard stuff” this year, like learning to read.
After the book she told me she was a little bit nervous so I asked her if I could pray for her, her classmates, and her teacher. As I was praying I glanced over and saw this, my big baby praying with my little baby. #cuethemommytears
This morning was a little different. It was the first day of workshop and it was a big deal! Waking up on time, hair combed, teeth brushed, matching shoes. Lunches packed, nutritious breakfast eaten and off we go!
And off she went! I can’t wait to pick her up and hear about her fantastic day!
Blessings from my family to yours!
We have been soaking up every last bit of summer these last few days.
I took this sweet thing back to school shopping. We got Starbucks and talked about how big she is getting. Its hard to believe my first baby is going to Kindergarten! I can’t possibly be old enough to have an elementary student.
Our normal neighborhood pool was closed one afternoon so we hiked up the hill to the other one. I was grouchy and grumpy about it on the way up but then we met new friends at the pool and then they held hands and sang on the way back… They certainty know how to turn my mood around.
Every year Ronnie & I attend Mastermind. Its a personal growth conference focused on business by Buffini and Company. This is our 4th year attending and it only gets better. This year one of the speakers was Diana Nyad, who swam from Cuba to Florida at 60, and she was amazing. It also made me NOT want to swim in the ocean. #sharks
I love this sweet baby and especially when she takes a peaceful morning nap. I can’t believe she is already 4 1/2 months old!
Blessings from my family to yours.
I have written about this before, this is mostly a reminder to me.
Spending time with Jesus is the most important thing I can accomplish each day. Sure, I can make a list of things that can seem more pressing…. spending time with my children, loving my husband, laundry (ugh), dishes (double ugh), feeding everyone. Quiet time is still more important than all of those because it allows me to do those things well, with a joyful spirit.
It is a discipline, and one that I didn’t quite develop until about 3 1/2 years ago. My best friend and I were both complaining about how we wanted to grow in the Lord but couldn’t quite fit a quiet time in our schedules. We both had little ones and their demands were keeping us busy and distracted during the day. We committed to texting each other at 5:30 every morning with a “Good Morning!” as a nice way to say “Get your booty out of bed and go read your Bible!” Then later (7:30-8ish) we were supposed to report back with a text about what we learned. It was the most fruitful season in my life to date. For the first time ever I had a normal routine that allowed me to get my quiet time in every day.
At first, it was a chore. Getting up early was painful, I wasn’t sure what I was going to read, I was already making lists of everything I had to accomplish that day and kept glancing at the clock till my “hour” was up. Then it grew into my most favorite time of the day because my relationship with Jesus grew! Instead of doing my due diligence I was engaging with my Savior! The long hour before now FLEW by and I reluctantly had to put down my journal and Bible.
In the past 3 1/2 years there have most definitely been seasons, its not always so romantic. I have had 2 babies and moved, she had 1 more baby and completed a masters degree. During the last month of pregnancy and the first month afterwards I don’t get up early to do my time. We don’t text every morning anymore, but the habit of quiet time is still there. It is still the exception when I DON’T get up early.
If I can be of any encouragement to you, just start. Wake up a little bit early and crack open your Bible. Pour yourself a HUGE cup of coffee and enjoy the quiet, where your heart can connect with the Lord.
Blessings from my family to yours.
We live a charmed life. Our days are full of fun and adventure, even in the simple moments. I don’t want to forget this sweet time when my kids are still little.
We got invited over for a swim play date, the best kind! I love this kiddo and her mama. Especially when she jumps in to save my boy who thinks he can swim but cant.
This baby is the sweetest. I could just eat her up.
She is a self soother, she gets a hold of those two fingers and she is content as can be. Its so sweet!
These two got picked up by Auntie Kelli to go to the movies and get ice cream. It is such a privilege to live in community and have others love on my kiddos. We are so blessed.
Oh Target. I love Target so much but lately the carts have been feeling cramped. Hadlie is still too little to sit up in the cart and often she is sleeping in her carseat so I hate to disturb her by strapping her on in the ergo so the WHOLE seat goes in the cart, then there isn’t room for any groceries. Also, popcorn is the best for keeping my kids interested in following me through the store. #weleaveatrail
Freddie is ALL BOY. After our incident on Tuesday, he fell out of a trampoline of Thursday only coming out with a scratch. He is the reason I will have gray hair, but I love every part of it. He got his first transformer this week and he thought he was big time. His big sisters have swim lessons these past couple week so we get an hour to ourselves (plus sleeping Hadlie) to play and read together, its awesome!
With the big sisters gone every morning Freddie and I got some fun one on one time (Hadlie was there too, but she is always game for what we want to do, wink!) One morning we went to the Children’s Museum another we watched trash trucks while swimming.
There is a construction site close to our house where they are building a ton of new homes. I made the mistake of getting him a milkshake and going over there one day to sit and watch the tractors. Guess what he wants to do every waking moment now?!?
I love catching them really enjoying each other. Its my favorite.
I got our family photos back this past week from our amazing cousin and photographer Emily. I already ordered a bunch of canvas and am counting down the minutes till it arrives!! Her pictures were amazing!!
That’s what we’ve been up to lately! Happy Monday!
Blessings from our family to yours!
